[New PSP Tear-down] LCD Panel is 1.5mm Thinner and 23g Lighter [Part 3]

The engineers disassembled a new Play Station Portable "PSP-2000" and an old model "PSP-1000" . And they turned their eyes from the printed-circuit boards to the LCD panels of the PSP-2000 and PSP-1000.
We realized that, in the PSP-2000, there is no metal part in the front of the LCD. This part was probably omitted to reduce the weight. The psp 2000 LCD screen is 2.5 mm thick and weighs 26 g. The LCD panel of the PSP-1000 is 4.0 mm thick and weights 49 g. So, the LCD panel of the PSP-2000 is 1.5 mm thinner and 23 g lighter than that of the PSP-1000.
The thickness of 2.5 mm "is not significantly thinner than the LCD panels used in recent mobile-phones," one of the engineers said.

We found a difference between the two models when we removed a metal cover in the front of the PSP-1000's LCD. In the PSP-1000, four driver ICs are embedded on the glass terminal port of the LCD panel. On the other hand, in the PSP-2000, no driver IC is mounted on the glass. It seems that LCD driver circuits, such as a gate driver and source driver, are formed on the glass substrate.

Furthermore, we dismantled the backlight parts of the LCDs. The thicknesses of the glasses for the PSP-1000 and PSP-2000 are 1.4 mm and 0.6 mm, respectively. Seemingly, the LCD panel was thinned mainly by reducing the thickness of the glass.

Steps:

1 . Connect the hard drive to your computer using a USB cord.

2 . Check what the File System type is by going to Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Manager. Select the external drive and read the "File System" type. The file system type must be FAT32 in order for the PlayStation to recognize it.

3 . FAT32 has a limit of 3.9 Gigabytes per file, which means some high quality HD movies might have to be split into smaller files, and that makes it less than ideal for some HD content.

4 . Please read this entire step before attempting - going into the command prompt is for advanced users only. It is recommended that you instead use HP's freeware tool "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool" instead of following this step which shows you how to manually format your drive.

• Note that on all of these systems the formatting process will take considerable time (possibly hours) depending on the size of the Hard Drive. This is normal, just be patient.
• Windows Users
  • If the file system type is "NTFS", right click and select "Delete Partition" or "Delete Volume" for Vista.
  • Recreate the partition but do NOT format it. Make sure you assign a drive letter (for this Tutorial, we'll use H:)
  • Format the drive by going to the command prompt (Vista, right click on Command Prompt in Start>All Programs>Accessories and click "Run as Administrator") and type in "format h: /FS:FAT32" (without the quotes). 8 . Disconnect the hard drive by clicking the green check-mark in the icon list and the bottom right hand corner of the screen and select "Safely remove..."

9 . Once your computer tells you "XXX drive can now be safely removed", unplug the hard drive from your computer.

10 . Connect the hard drive to your PlayStation 3 and use the extra space to save information and access all your extra content saved on your external hard drive.
